Why? Because they are fun. If you are like me, the majority of my friends don’t read fantasy or science fiction books. They don’t read comic books. And they don’t particularly enjoy going to movies adapted from both.
That leaves me needing to talk to others about my passions.
There is no better place to do that than at a geeky ole’ convention! This last weekend, I attended the Emerald City Comic Con, the yearly convention featuring the best in comic books. I didn’t hunt out the celebrities. Sir Patrick Stewart had a line to Portland. I didn’t game against gamers who are 13 years old and better than I am. Why embarrass myself? I didn’t even attend the showing of the original 1966 Batman movie starring Adam West and Burt Ward as the POWing duo, who were in attendance.
No, I went for the comic book people. While I walked around, marveling at how large the convention has grown since I first attended it in 1994, I was surprised at the depth of the show. It has grown into—from what I can tell—the best comic book show in the US. They focus on comic books and I love that!

Later this year, I will be attending PhoenixCon and the San Diego Comic Con, both of which are massive conventions. I’m excited to cover them and meet other like-minded readers and geeks!

And be sure to attend if you can!
It’s better than Oz!
