Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!
The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for AvX #12. Marvel Comics has featured the Avengers versus the X-Men several times over the last five decades but nothing has met the explosiveness of this most recent bout. It will change the Marvel universe forever and this cover marks it well. The Phoenix has been in the Marvel Universe since 1976, always prompting change of some sort—whether it be with an individual or the universe. Several artists have had the opportunity to pencil it and it’s always done with greatness.
Why do I love this cover though? It’s Adam Kubert, first of all. He’s one of my favorite pencilers and I suspect he always will be. He can be incredibly detailed when it is needed but I love his work when he goes simple, elegant lines. This cover is one of those situations. The Phoenix is in all her/its glory, fire billowing in the shape of the mythical bird, the intentions featured in her burning eyes, the pose of her fists and legs, the anger seething. The cover evokes a feeling in the observer and that’s what a great comic book is supposed to do.
