Badass Comic Book Cover: The Walking Dead #100B

Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!

The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for The Walking Dead #100. First off, this is a monumental issue. The comic book that started such a zombiefied phenomenon has reached a milestone. Who would have thought the story of Rick Grimes would become buried in pop culture the way it has through the adaptation on AMC? Probably Robert Kirkman. Regardless, through great writing and inventive new stories, The Walking Dead is keeping zombies alive—if that makes sense.

Why do I love this cover though? It’s the setting and use of color. Rick Grimes stands with his back to the viewer. Why? Because there is a horde of zombies waiting for him in the background. The pencil work here is the epitome of what I’ve come to expect from Marc Silvestri—sharp, jagged lines lending itself well to horror. Revolver held at the ready. Katana sharpened and waiting. The characters wait. Or will they? What I love most is the use of color here; the zombies are their usual dead gray but the two characters pull the eye upward into the sky that is explosive red and orange. Hell is coming and only the zombies will know it. A great composition and worthy as a variant to Issue #100.

The Story: “SOMETHING TO FEAR” CONTINUES! This extra-sized chapter contains one of the darkest moments in Rick Grimes’ life, and one of the most violent and brutal things to happen within the pages of this series. 100 issues later, this series remains just as relentless as the debut issue. Do not miss the monumental 100th issue of THE WALKING DEAD!
