Badass Comic Book Cover: The Gunslinger: The Man In Black #1

Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!

The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for Dark Tower: The Gunslinger: The Man in Black #1. Stephen King’s Dark Tower has been one of the constants in my life. From the moment I read The Gunslinger, I was entranced by Mid World and Roland Deschain’s quest to discover the Dark Tower and set right the crumbling universe. And when Marvel Comics decided to adapt it, I knew I would follow, because Stephen King and Robin Furth have expanded certain elements only hinted at in the novels.

Why do I love this cover though? It’s Alex Maleev. He is a fantastic artist. He has taken the uncertainty found in Roland’s life and translated it into a broken image—which is perfect. The man in black has the supernatural fire burning in his eye and it matches the desert sun that has guided the gunslinger onward. The ravens or crows flying across the sky—a symbol of death, of life, or beans, beans the magical fruit? And in the background, the gunslinger and his Dark Tower, still far in the distance. It is a piece of art that draws from many aspects of the novel and distills them down into one piece. Love it!
