Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!
The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for The Mighty Thor #11. Thor is one of the great Marvel characters, reaching into most aspects of the Marvel universe. Now that he has had a quality movie treatment and will be featured prominently in the forthcoming Avengers film by Joss Whedon, comic book readers are once again flocking to read the God of Thunder.
Why do I love this cover though? It’s a Dale Keown cover, for one. No one draws muscled men and creatures like him. Keown worked on arguably the best run on The Incredible Hulk with writer Peter David, as well as created his own character in Pitt. Here, Keown adds his signature to the God of Thunder. The arms are massive and powerful, hands strong. The face is resolute and proud. The way Thor is holding Mjolnir suggests he is paying homage to the lightning itself. The movement of the blonde hair is evidence of the wind behind Thor, a storm coming with the god. It’s a great image of the Asgardian, drawn with the power that only Keown brings.
