Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!
The BadAss Cover for this week is for Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1. Several weeks ago, Peter Parker in the Ultimate universe died. It was a good death, as they say, protecting those he loves. It opened a door, however, to a new Spider-Man, one whose background is very different from that of Parker’s. While Miles Morales has been given the same great power and same great responsibility, he is half-black / half-latino, a kid growing up in Brooklyn, NY. He is not Peter Parker. Reviews of the issue have been on fire, with Newsarama absolutely loving it. And I have to say, having read the preview, I’m greatly impressed with his introduction to the Marvel universe.
Why do I love this cover though? First, it’s the costume. It deviates from Peter Parker’s costume but actually works. Do I love the costume for the upcoming movie reboot of the character? Nope. Hate it. But this costume? Works. It’s just dark enough to represent the additional hardships this Spider-Man will have to face but the design is sleek and energetic. That energy explodes out of the page, if you look closely, and the entire composition screams, “Read me now! I’m badass!”
