I am a Christopher Nolan fanatic. Every movie he has created has been platinum in my book. The man knows how to weave a story and that is evidenced most keenly in The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception.
The other thing he and his team are great at is rising expectations during the filming—and then taking those high expectations and hitting them out of the ball park. Well, for his next movie The Dark Knight Rises, he is already upping his game. For today he has released the first teaser poster for the movie.
I love this poster. It’s the kind of poster I would hang in my personal Bat cave. The atmosphere it invokes about Gotham and Batman’s place in it has me salivating for the movie already. And it doesn’t come out for another year! You can hear my grumbling from where you are sitting.
I have a feeling Batman isn’t rising for much of this movie… Well… maybe when Catwoman is around… Ha!
So what do you think? Love it? Hate it? Don’t care?

I like the poster, and I *love* Nolan’s films. I have to be honest though, the one thing he seems to have a weakness about is women actors. Aside from Carrie-Ann Moss in Memento, and Ellen Page (though her character wasn’t terribly fleshed out – you have to look back at Page’s other work to know she’s an amazing actor) and Marion Cotillard (brilliant) in Inception, he’s gone with questionable talent in that department. Scarlet Johansen (sp?) was distractingly sub-par compared to everyone else in The Prestige, Katie Holmes could’ve been replaced by a coat rack with a wig, and Maggie Gyllenhal – while the most talented of the three – has more of an “eclectic” or “alternative” look/style. I’m already nervous enough about the inclusion of Catwoman in this installment, and the rumors it’s Anne-Hathaway? I like Anne! But she’s another one-note woman who can’t act her way out of a stereotypical role.
Why can Nolan extract such amazing things from male leads, but can’t consistently pick a good woman *and* have her do well in a three-dimensional role is beyond me. Ledger’s Joker has got to be one of the best performances ever, of any kind. When he is on the screen you simply can’t look away. And the chills? Please don’t let Catwoman have the same facial expression and monotone voice the whole time….it’ll be such a waste.
I agree, Z! This is Nolan’s opportunity to really flesh out a female character who is mostly in a lead role on par with Batman — at least I hope she is. ScarJo’s character was really underutilized in The Prestige, as was Leo’s wife and Ellen Paige in Inception. If he can’t do it with Catwoman — one of the strongest female characters in comic book history — then there is something wrong.
